Not having done the Pike Race since the 1980s, I would appreciate some advice concerning what shoes to wear. My dilemma is this: do I run in fell shoes which will not give my back any cushioning on the concrete path and the road - especially on the descent, or do I run in road shoes with a grip and risk slipping on the grassy bits?
Some advice from regular Pike runners would be much appreciated.

I think it's got to be trail shoes, Chris. I'll be in studs as it'll be wetter than usual, but trail shoes will give you reasonable grip (to miss the very worst goo go left as you re-enter the field below Georges Lane and follow the hard path round the hairpin) and will give you some cushioning on the run-in. Sorry to have to suggest a compromise.
I ran up and down there today in Kanadias (trail shoe rather than fell) and was fine. It's surprisingly not that muddy/slippery at the minute.
