Yr Aran Sat 21st March 2015

To follow a great Friday evening (thanks to all who made it happen) I decided to have a bash at a Welsh race for a change.

Yr Aran is a 905m peak just south of Bala, the race route starts from the village of Llanuwchllyn and is 5 miles straight up and back down again. No trouble with the navigating, especially with the glorious sunshine provided.

It's the peak mid centre of the photo above. Now you'll have to agree that it looks a runable slope from a distance. But even with a following wind on the way up, I probably walked 2/3rds of it. A very deceptive final summit that kept looking further away the more you ran towards it.

I had done this race before in 2010. There wasn't as much snow about this year and had to climb up the final stile before the last little scramble to the top, instead of being able to just step across the top of it because of the huge snow drift. It just goes to show how changeable the March weather can be with the 2014 race shortened and the 2013 race cancelled altogether. This year 'suncream' was the additional kit requirement with a few of the faster male runners flouting FRA rules by not having their number on their chest, but (on their vest) tucked down their shorts!

Maybe I spent to much time looking at all (out'n'back route remember!) the views this year, so a little disappointed with only a 8 min improvement on the time from 2010. The respective Black Combe times from the same years saw a 13 min difference. But a pb is a pb, and the views were worth it!

The following day saw me head up to Oxenholme for the 11th (my 10th) race of the Kendal Winter League. A testing 2 lap run around Helm Hill. No results as yet, so will have to see how I'm placed in the league table before the final race at Elterwater. TloB was there too, testing out his hamstring. The suggested 'run with me for the first lap' evaporated into the ether by the time we reached the first climb. He was massaging it thoughtfully on my return, so hopefully it won't curtail his chances at the last race and his 7th required counter for a good league finish.

A busy weekend

First and most importantly,  a truly excellent equinox "do" where we celebrated JtE's coming 80th and although TLoB over-focussed on me, looking forward to The Pike Race, if JtE were to arrive fresh with 100 to go to the finish, I know who my money would be on ... and not just against me. I'm sure he still possesses an exquisite turn of speed.
The main UTUP on Saturday, alas, only had EtU, Colin and myself setting off. By the descent from the Pike to Georges Lane, that had diminished to just yours truly : Colin having planned to be home early while Ed had not planned to cut his run short but say no more!  I persevered, had a chat with Dave Jackson before ascending to Two Lads and then continued to Winter Hill and thence to Hordern Stoops, the Bomber Memorial and Healey Nab : a good morning's run 21k (13 miles) in just over 2 hrs 30.
Today, saw an early start as I was sweeping on the Two Crosses Circuit so no running but 25 miles of quite brisk walking as we set off 30 minutes behind everyone else and need to spend a few minutes at each checkpoint to ensure everyone is safely through. Saw Kev at the start. Didn't see TM but know she ran (posted on Strava) - photo of Kev here and TM here.
At last I have got a decent amount of training in for the week - 50 miles and 6670 feet of ascent on top of 36/5600 the previous week.

My 80th Birthday Do.

I am so overwhelmed by the events of last Friday evening that I don’t know quite where to start this posting. I was amazed to see the number of people in attendance and it made me realize just how lucky I have been in being a member of the gang, so to speak. My running has always been for the sake of fitness and even more so, being involved with so many good people who have become my friends.

I think it would be appropriate first of all to thank Ed ( I hope you don’t mind me using actual names in this blog) for making the event happen in the first place. He approached me about a month ago to agree upon a venue and I can imagine the effort that then went in, in contacting so many people and arranging things with Rivington View. Many thanks Ed.

Then there is Chris who so eloquently spoke after the meal. The words spoken were so kind and I was quite overwhelmed by their kindness and generosity. They were spoken by a true friend and that means everything to me.

Pauline and Ian had organized, on behalf of all of you, my superb birthday present; a beautiful photograph and a cup embossed with a photograph of me. The picture is taken from the route from Noon Hill to the Pike; an area I love to traverse. It is of the fine quality we have come to expect from Pauline and it catches the unique cotton grass typical of our fells and a glorious sky all enhanced by the evening light. Many thanks to you both for the picture and also for arranging the mounting of the picture in such an attractive manner. A tremendous effort in all of this which is greatly appreciated. The picture is now in its resting place and I attach a photo of this.

After the presentation there was the cake enhanced or otherwise you might say, with a picture of me. Regardless of the picture it was a wonderfully presented piece of confectionery and complete with, I think, eight lighted candles. I understand that there were difficulties achieving this presentation because of manufacturing inadequacies. Your efforts are greatly appreciated Nicole and Hazel. Many thanks. The cake itself was delicious and has been quickly finished off at home!

I find it difficult to express my gratitude to all who attended the do and I feel that what I have said in this blog is far less than what I feel.

Lastly I see that Chris is running a sweepstake in regard to my time achieved in the Pike race. I assume that I am not allowed to participate other than to run the race.

The Morning After and The Night Before

The Night Before was a great success. A big turn out to celebrate JtE's 80th and I think it is true to say that everyone enjoyed themselves, especially the main man, JtE. A big thank you to EtU for organising the venue, and to NLN for sorting out the presents.

The Morning After saw JtE, SN and my good self at the entrance to Lever Park for a recce of the Pike Race course. It turned out that SN had never run the route before but that didn't stop her setting a good pace up the concrete path, and we reached the top in 25 minutes. JtE then demonstrated his descending skills and we completed the course in 40.07.

Given that we had to stop and open all the gates, I reckon that at least 2 minutes can be knocked off this on race day. So I am proposing a sweepstake: predict JtE's time on Easter Saturday and the closest will win a bottle of wine that I will provide. To start the ball rolling, my entry is 37.36.

Black Combe split times

Thought I'd post these. Although not showing on the new website, I manage to find (with a bit of 'googling') a record of previous split times. There's no split results that I can find for 2012, as that's the year we had a different start point. EtU, KLM and CW may recall that year as the 'hailstone' year.

The control box I chose at the fodder rack wasn't recording in 2011, so I've also combined the times for those two sections to enable a direct comparison between the various years.

Interesting that the middle downhill section hasn't varied much over the years. The one thing that has is my starting weight, with probably an extra 7lbs to carry up the hill in 2014 & 2015 than 2011 and 2013. A bit like putting on a rucksack loaded with 3 bags of sugar. No wonder the uphill times vary so much!

Black Combe Fell Race Sat 14th March 2015

Things wouldn't be the same without the annual pilgrimage to the Western Peninsula for what is one of my favourite races. It was a week later this year than it's usual slot of the first Saturday in March, presumably to avoid a clash with the Flower Scar championship race. Big question, would this mean I'd be a week fitter and manage to beat last years' time?

Times have varied from an all time best of 1:52 (2011, the Wasdale year!) to a recorded slowest of 2:16. The slowest time was at my second attempt in 2010, my first attempt in 2009 failed by not correctly locating the Marshalls at CP5. Unbeknownst to me (and about 20 others) CP5 had in fact been relocated to the village hall by the time we'd reached it's original location!

This is one of the few fell races (other than championship races) to employ dibbers. With CPs positioned at the end of ups, downs and flat bits it gives a very good indication of where your (and others) strengths and weaknesses are. Mine are definitely the downs, but not for Olivia, tall skinny blonde who finished 3rd Lady. Olivia usually wins the races in the Manchester Area Cross Country League I help organise, so imagine my delight when I found out I can run downhill quicker on one of the steeper sections (CP4 -CP5), well for 5 mins anyway, and was only 2 mins slower on the last descent!

The race has a new website and the results with the splits can be found here https://fellrace.org.uk/races/blackcombe/2015/splits Those with older versions of internet explorer may find the website may not function so well.

Due to some of the dibbers not having been cleared from previous events it appears as though I lost 3 places on the last descent, scandalous! But as there were 7 dibbers in front of me not working (only recording finish time) my actual position at each of the CPs was as follows

1st - 200, 2nd - 203, 3rd - 203, 4th - 201, 5th - 196, 6th - 196 and Finish - 192 and 2:03:31 . Quicker than last year, so that extra week of training paid off!

Stan Bradshaw Pendle Round - Saturday 7th March '15

Having been told by my GP that there is nothing wrong with me that can't be improved by training harder, losing weight and drinking less, I decided to return to racing and to fight my way back to my rightful position - i.e just a few places from the end of the last sheet of the results of any race that I am foolish enough to enter.

So it was that I found myself at the back of the assembled throng straining at the leash at the start of the 2015 Stan Bradshaw Pendle Round.

Two hours and twenty one minutes later saw me stagger over the finish line, 24 minutes after the TF and one hour and ten minutes after the winner. The only folk behind me were two Trawden ladies and a scattering of marshalls dismantling race signage.

The weather had started off cold and breezy but improved during the morning and by the finish I was ready to take my gloves off. Underfoot conditions were wet, but no worse than to be expected at this time of year.

Next race is Liver Hill on 31st March; target:- to beat at least one man - we will see.

Four days after that it's the Pike!

Cross country's over for another year

In the dim and distant past, quite a few of the blokes on the blog used to partake in xc's (EtU, YJ, JtE, TLoB) but now it seems to be usually just me, although Andy has made his debut this season before going onto bigger and longer things (as I write, he should be completing the TransGranCanaria - 120+ km).
The hardest thing today was getting there. I'd looked at the map and was fairly confident that I new where the location, Rylands Park in Lancaster, was - quite straight forward as it's just off the road to Morecambe. The really difficult part was getting away from Horwich. I set off in reasonably good time but, as I was about to turn onto the M61, noticed that the traffic was at a standstill. I didn't fancy that as although it might clear in ten minutes, I could be stuck for an hour. No probs, I'll go up the A6 - got just past the Cherry Tree and a tailback which could be going all the way to Chorley. Turn round, up through Blackrod and Standish (which was also quite clogged but I persevered). I managed to then make good ground up the M6 and turned off towards Lancaster at about 2pm, now confident that I would make the race but with little time for a warm up.
Morecambe Road is always slow so I eventually got parked and made it to the tent area with about ten minutes to spare, to the delight of two fellow Horwich athletes as we now had a V50 team!
The race was fast and furious. My garmin was playing up so I only have the results and course description to go off. I suspect it was not 9.6km as advertised as I completed in 40:24 which would be close on an all-time PB, so I suspect it was nearer 9km. I was having a really good battle with old fella who seemed to be making fast spurts but chatting after the race he thought I was running unevenly. As my garmin failed to record, I shall never know. I suspect he knows what he was talking about. I told I thought he would be likely to beat EYJ and Paul Murray had they run as I seemed to be running well. He then revealed that he had in fact won the Ben Nevis Race ... not once but four times. And he is not wrong, name is Peter Hall and won in 62/63/64/65, curently ranked 10th V70 overall in UK and does parkruns in sub 22, as well as Horwich BMAF 5k (2013) in sub 20.
TM also ran but I didn't get time to chat with her - no doubt she will post on her six legs blog.

Bewitched,Bothered, and Bewildered

Just testing out. I accepted the invitation to join the Blog, EtU, and up flashed a screen which disappeared more quickly than YJ used to run up Winter Hill, but the gist of it was, it didn't want  to know me. A common trait. However an uncommon screen appeared with brightly shining buttons apart from a Publish button which was as dim as me. That's pretty dim. Naturally I pressed it and against all odds it published as you will have seen from the previous nothing post. So I might be back on after a year out in the cold, though the casual Matt has been replaced by a nomenclature belonging to a bygone age. I am now, in this flush of excitement, going to attempt to include a photo.

Haweswater and back

Arrived in falling snow,  turned at the halfway point in a snowstorm and drove back through a blizzard - other than that my debut in the Haweswater half marathon was a successful outing, being by far the oldest entrant yet finishing 356th out of 503.

Checking previous results had suggested slow times could be expected and given the hilly nature of the course this proved to be the case.  My target of 2 hours was always going to be a challenge, getting harder as the finish approached, and my efforts were rewarded with a time of 1 hr 58 mins.  Placing was first over 75, there being no other finishers over 70.

Other results of interest?  Brendan Bolland (Horwich) 1.24 and Erica Booth (Horwich) 1,47.

Hobble?

Over the years the Haworth Hobble has been popular amongst members of the group. Last year I entered but didn't even drive over as an accident at work the previous day put paid to any chance of running 32 miles, even driving over would have been difficult.
So this year I am determined to complete it as I certainly need it as part of my preparation for the LDWA100 in May.
I'll hold off entering till later in the week if anyone wants to run as a pairing. I'm not too bothered about a very fast time. I would hope to run under seven hours but getting the distance is more important. For any first-timers, I do have the advantage of course knowledge.
Let me know by next weekend if interested. No UTUP for me this morning as I'd foolishly arranged a dental checkup : I should have waited for a cross-country Saturday. Lostock 6 tomorrow.

The Witch of Pendle

A few weeks ago, the TF and I did a first recce of the Stan Bradshaw round. We found all the checkpoints ok but were not too happy with our route choice, so TF arranged another recce last Wednesday.

The plan was to meet at Barley at 9am. I arrived at 8.55 to find the TF and EtU already there (NLN sadly had a cold so couldn't join us) and we were about to set off when my phone beeped. It was t'Y saying he was en route. Now clearly time keeping is not t'Y's strongpoint, and the  TF quite rightly pointed out that 9am does not mean 9.20am. Luckily for t'Y, the TF is a nice person; if she had been one of the local witches, she might have turned him into a frog.

The recce was a big success. We tried a short cut along the summit wall but decided that the 200m it saved was more than offset by having to run on tussocks. We found a much better line for the long stretch down to the reservoir and also up the long hill. All told we did just short of 9 miles and 1700 ft of climbing. A good day out was finished off with a nice cuppa at the café.

So thanks to the TF for arranging it, and to EtU and t'Y for the pleasure of their company. The race is on March 7th and entries close on March 1st. I do recommend the course, so if you fancy entering, I will see you there.

A weekend in Bolton

I stopped  over in Bolton on my way back from working in Reading and took the opportunity to get out on the fells on Saturday morning with JtE. It seems that all the regular UTUPers were ambling ( and in the case of t'Y, rambling), so we had the local fells to ourselves, and very pleasant it was too. We did an anti- clockwise round of the summits and then followed the Pike race descent to the school before returning to the barn. It was great to see JtE again, and despite his protestations to the contrary, he is running well. A good morning all round.

Sunday saw my good lady wife make a return to racing after a gap of nearly 20 years, when she entered the Bolton 5k. It was a good spectator event, and there was a good Horwich turn out, even if the only one I recognised was EYJ. So if anyone Horwich runners ask who was the bloke with a cockney accent cheering them on Sunday, you will be able to tell them.F or the record, SWINW did a few seconds over 30 mins and was 3rd in her age category - but I am not allowed to mention what that is.

A good workout on the Amble

For the second year running I managed to devise my own alternative route across Darwen Moor. I wasn't the only to deviate from the prescribed route, as TM and friends decided to do a lap of a field somewhere near Belmont and goodness knows where Andy went : we wait to hear.
Despite being up with ample time, I managed to be on the last minute and parked up at the UP rather than trying to find space near the hall. Further delayed by a chap who followed me into the car park and just as I was heading out, asked me if I knew of an LDWA Challenge Event that he was looking for. So I waited while he sorted himself out and escorted him to the hall. See, some people can become TM  even before they start the event.
Eventually away a good five minutes late, my first encounter was NLN heading down from the Rivington Green to the hall, obviously less concerned with a fast start than even me. Multitudes of walkers to navigate past up to the top barn then queues on the way up to Pike, by which time I had caught up with a few runners (or maybe hybrid walker/runners?). And onto Pike Cottage and up to Winter Hill with sections of walking whilst chatting with friends from LDWA.
On the climb near Belmont Reservoir, I recognised the style that I correctly identified as TM so ran with her and her friends, asking if she's seen YJ and EtU to which she replied "there's John", only 10 yards away. So we generally ran together to the feed station at Entwistle Reservoir where EYJ was helping(?) out. YJ took a flyer whilst we had the compulsory 20 minute sit down second breakfast (lots of nice cakes). I eventually caught up with YJ, stopped for a pee, caught up with him again and turning off Blackburn Road, he then had a pit stop, also refuelling (I of course had no need, having taken in plenty of nourishment at the checkpoint). So I continued, thinking I ought to make an effort, having been fairly languid so far, With nobody in sight, I somehow managed to miss a turning and the path I was on petered out. Checking where I was, I decided I was too far south, so headed north, traversing over fields over horrible tussocks and barbed wire fences. I eventually hit a road up to a farmhouse and realised where I was so picked up the Witton Weavers Way, knowing that I would eventually get to Darwen Tower, no doubt some time behind YJ and TM. I saw no runners until I hit the ridge path from Slipper Rowe to Darwen Tower with the first encounter being with KLM. A good run along the path brought me to the tower which I encircled to find the clipper and return the along the route I had just run. A relatively quick feed at Slipper Rowe followed by a laboured climb to Great Hill where two runners passed me, which disturbed me into making an effort which I did and caught them up on the way down pass Tom's Cup then they passed my on the muddier parts. I decided to take the alternate route to White Coppice for a change and for me, at least at this time of year, the quarry route is faster, as I retook them on the descent.
I rejoined the route from the cricket club just as TM as arriving. Then ten minutes later, they were with me - they'd skipped the food!!! A good run in brought me home in 6 hours exactly with TM arriving 3 minutes later to have good conversation and an excellent hotpot and peas. NLN and FSS were already on their second or third brew. Shortly after YJ arrived but no sign of EtU. I assume KLM must have just gone. And no sign of TLoB whatsoever - thought you were going to do it?
Comparing my strava upload with TM's, I was in fact slightly north of where I should have been, and managed to find a much more direct route across Darwen Moor, though I would not recommend it.
It was by far my longest run of the year so a bit stiff today but a good build up for the 100. I've got 12 days holiday booked between now and the end of April so hope to get some long midweek runs to build up the mileage.
Anyone interested in doing t'Hobble and Spring Into Lakeland?

KWL - Fairmile

After a very foggy drive up the M6 I was relieved to find a clear view of the tops when I arrived at the race parking. Unfortunately by the time I'd got out of the car and got my phone out the mist had rolled in and the picture above was the best I could manage of the first 'climb'. The route took you to the left of the stream in the centre of the pic. It rolled in even further on the approach to the 1pm start time so felt a bit disappointed that I wasn't going to get to see much on my first attempt at this race.

However couldn't believe the pre-race instructions when we were informed it was 'cracking the flags' on the top, so stubbornly kept my jacket on under my vest. 20 mins later wished I hadn't. Given that it was such a short race I knew I wouldn't have the time to remove it so had to put up with 'boil in the bag' feeling.

But it was worth it. Views on the top stunning. The race route was just my cup of tea - steep up and down grassy stuff. I think I have a new favourite KWL, although my legs may not agree. Results are on the Helm Hill website.

Mid-week run in February

I'm planning a mid-week run on Weds 18th Feb (half-term week for some). My plan is to recce the Stan Bradshaw Pendle Round again. I've now acquired the official race map and both myself and TLoB felt a further go was required to sort out our racing lines!

2 options for meeting points.

a) Car Park @ the David Lloyd gym just off jcn 8 M61 (east side), suggested meeting time is 8:15am, aiming to arrive in Barley Car Park approx 9am. Travel in my car to Barley, leaving other cars in the DL car park. This should be fine so long as cars are parked at the furthest point from the front entrance (can't be too cheeky for free parking).

b) Car Park @ Barley, suggested meeting time 9:00-9:15am

The times above are initial suggestions, happy to adjust to suit, but would like to avoid the rush hour traffic on the M65/M61 on the way back so we'd need to be leaving Barley by 3pm at the latest.

Let me know if you're interested.

I have now had the all clear from  the surgeon and can  resume normal activities which means I can now run  with the grown ups again,  that means over the rough stuff.

As a consequence I shall be UTUPping tomorrow.

Saturday 31st January

I'm UTUPing and hoping for company.

January Roundup

A month of getting out and about locally as no driving with the broken arm – a few more here if it’s of interest.  Progress is going well and feeling fully recovered from the surgery, another week and hoping to get back to normal : )  Whatever that is!

Altruism!

Here's my blog of yesterday's UTUP plus a couple of pics...

Words for the picture!

IT at work have now sorted out our default browser, so I now have full access to posting on the blog at work. Not sure how long this will last before they start putting 'blocks' back on, so will enjoy while it lasts!

The previous 2 posts have now been amended accordingly!

Not UTUP

Here I am studying the map at the trig on Pendle Hill (photo from TLoB).

We'd climbed straight up from Ings Head farm. Grateful that a couple of walkers had led the way about 15mins earlier leaving some handy footprints in the snow.

A good morning out, with a well earned stop in the cafe afterward.

Sun 25th

Whitestone, 4th race in the KWL. No TLoB today as he'd headed south to earn some beer money. The trusty orocs and waterproof socks meant a better foot experience this year through the boggy bits and grippier on the 2 short steep bits.

Another win for Anna again, so 3-1 so far. Can't see things improving for me as the planned Saturday runs will be getting longer over the next couple of weeks!

Saturday 24th

I'm UTUPing - anyone else?

Will it be an Oroc day, or just regular stuff?

Giggleswick

Snowy conditions for this little race. TLoB was sporting his new club colours. Waterproof socks and orocs were the preferred choice again.

This was the first race of the series where I could do a direct comparison with last year. The first race was a slightly shorter course than the previous year and race 2 I hadn't done last year. A bit depressing reading to find I was nearly 3 minutes slower. Results are now on the Helm Hill website.

Sat 24th Jan

I'm planning a recce of the Stan Bradshaw Pendle Round (race on 7th March, details on C-le M site). All welcome. I'm leaving my house at 8am and have room for 3 in my car. Aiming to arrive at Barley about 9am for a 9.30am start. Not likely to be a very fast pace as certain key 'lines' need to be checked.

If anyone is interested in a lift let me know (I'm not intending to do any detours en-route so if you want a lift you'll need to come to my house). Alternative would be to meet at the car park in Barley, again let me know so know to expect you.

Saturday 17th Jan

Four of us out this morning, more than of late. The ground was covered in a mix of hail and snow, and the depth was never deep, but increased slightly with height.

We all set off for White Coppice and, having achieved that objective, we let YJ do his Duracell Bunny thing as he headed off through the forestry towards Brinscall, aiming thence for Abbey Village and 16 miles.

We remaining three set off for Great Hill, but as we approached Drinkwater's TM realised that she had not left herself enough time to run home, and, turning to retrace her steps, with her mobile to her ear, muttered "He's not picking up!".

KLM and I summitted Great Hill then returned to base via Spitlers, Pauline's Path and Ammunition corner, pausing as we approached the barn, to talk to one of my non-running daughters (three fall into this category) and her companion.

Not a lot of miles covered (except possibly by YJ), mostly due to my pitiful pace, but an enjoyable outing nevertheless. Hope you made it to the wedding on time, TM (cue for a song?).

Thursday, Saturday and Monday (today)

Thursday at the Dentist's - Those of you who were at the most recent 'do' may recall the discussion regarding my temporary cantelever dental bridge. Well, it turned out to be significantly more temporary than expected - I managed to pull it off (out?) with a piece of chewing gum. Thursday saw me at the dentist's having it more securely fixed. Sitting in the waiting room, I heard a familiar voice emanating from the Xray room - it was Julie's Recruit, Mick M. He was engaged in conversation with one of the practice support staff and was demonstrating the classic mechanic's sharp intake of breath and head shake as he gave his diagnosis on the condition of the Xray machine. Cut to the chase:- We had a good old chat - he is still an avid follower of our blog - he keeps running, although he spends a lot of his time supporting a number of close family members who have serious health problems - he hopes to turn out again with us on a regular basis, when circumstances allow - and he sends everyone his best wishes. Good to see you Mick, let's hope we see you with your legs muddy very soon.

Saturday - Just the Come-back Bros were out. YJ was going well but keeping off any seriously rough ground to avoid the fd thing. I trailed along slightly behind him and covered a good 10 miles to his 12 on an out and back route to Brinscall Woods.

Monday (today)  - Managed the climbs from the Top Barn, five minutes faster than my first come-back run nine days ago, in spectacularly awful conditions. Character building!

Kendal Winter League

As the TF rightly pointed out, next Sunday's race is at Giggleswick, 5 minutes walk from my house. It is also my birthday on Sunday, so after the race, I intend to go to one of the excellent pubs in Giggleswick to celebrate.
It would be good if some WFDBWGUA readers could come up and do the race/drink beer or both. It starts at 1pm and is £3 to enter.

Firbank (TF version)

As TLofB has already alluded to, the weather was atrocious. I have learnt from last years series, you arrive early to get a parking spot near to registration, pay your £3 and then catch up on a bit of reading until timing it right to venture back out of the car in time for the pre-race head count.

Those who are slightly less 'risk-adverse' arrive late, parking their car in a spot that 'Mum/Dad's taxi' has vacated. This can work equally well as the bloke in the Farrier's van that parked in front of me can attest to.

Today's race required full FRA gear. Mine was easy to see as I was wearing most of it, with my club vest worn over my waterproof jacket as there wasn't a cat in hells chance the jacket was coming off! TLofB was opting for a more 'incognito' method, until that is he opened his mouth (nuff said!!!). It was a very brief hello, and we were off.

I'd been given a verbal description of the route from Anna (Helm Hill) last week, so arrived with my head in gear for a 2 lapper. Having been pipped by Anna by over a minute last week, I was pleased to catch her on the 2nd lap and arrive back about 30 secs in front. Orocs and waterproof socks were a good choice this week.

It's going to take a lot more to catch TLofB, but I could stand a chance at Cautley, but definitely Yarlside. Looking forward to next week at Giggleswick, if it's the same course as last year it's an absolute little cracker. Hope to see TLofB on his home turf sporting his new club colours.

All the details about the races can be found on the Helm Hill website, including maps of the courses.

Freezing Firbank Fell

Settle Harriers take part in the Kendal Winter League, and today's race was at Firbank Fell, described as a field next to the M6. Well it is near Jn 37 of the M6 but it is not a field, being far too hilly to fit the description, and besides, the clue is in the name. Today the problem was not  the hill but the weather which was atrocious, howling wind and driving rain/hail; at one point I thought I was running on the spot, such was the strength of the wind.
But I survived and was revived in a smashing pub in Barbon - highly recommended if you are ever that way. Results are not out until mid-week; last week at Scout Scar I was 10th V60, so I am hoping I have improved a place or two.

Two footnotes;
1  I had a pleasant surprise just at the start today, a voice said "hello" and there was TF. My apologies for not trying to find you afterwards, -I just wanted to get warm!
2 On Thursday, I posted an article about the 3 Peaks on this site, but clearly there is a time warp between Settle and Horwich as it appeared as having been posted on January 2nd. Any clues?

Who's a softy?

I see that NLN is made of sterner stuff than myself, running  over rough ground with a broken arm.

Sadly I am still keeping to tarmac and smoother, more level tracks than those up on Winter Hill. I have been warned not to do anything that might tear apart the carefully embroidered 12 in. scar that adorns my shoulder, at least until the end of  January.  This means no swimming, not lifting anything heavy or, given my proclivity to falling over (or being pushed?), not running on terrain more suitable for grown ups.

So, although I will be UTUPing on Saturday,  gales permitting,  my choice of route will be predetermined and boring.  If anyone wants to join me the route will be: Rivington Green, Bowling Club, Cascade, Yew Tree,  bridle path to White Coppice (missing out the Nab) , Goyt, underground cowshed, Brinscall and Abbey Village, returning by the same route hopefully faster than the outward leg. Target is 16 miles

Medical note: The wound is healing nicely  and I hope  to be given the green light for full activity when I see the consultant on  January 30th.
